NGAO Observing Scenarios Information

This page is used to summarize the work for the observing scenarios. The observing scenarios and example observations are used to develop the use cases (observing modes, sequences, etc). The example observations and the use cases are the two main components of the Observing Operations Concept Document (OOCD).

Material for the OOCD

Sean Adkins is developing a document that provide standards for the OOCD. Available from the NGAO development standards page

Draft for the Observing Operation Concept Document

Observing Efficiency

Observing Scenario during the SD phase

The workscope planning sheet as been approved here as well.

  • Here is the Generic Observing Scenario Worksheet (xls) that we will use to derive some of the Science Operations Requirements from the Science Cases. We need to understand the observing scenarios first to estimate in details the observing efficiency budget, the requirements for the science operations, etc.

  • 5/8 update: Elizabeth McGrath? and D. Le Mignant will work on providing a narrative for this spreadsheet to help astronomers fill it in.
  • Lessons Learned so far:
    • David started to talk to Chris and Ralf at Keck to improve the observing scenario spreadsheet.
    • Need to simulate Strehl map as a function of observing scenarios parameters
      • Availability and selection of the TT stars depending on science target
      • Laser configuration (Fixed or variable asterism / on the TT star / on the science targets, etc)
      • How we run realistic simulations for GOODS? Extract all known guide stars from GOODS and major survey catalogs?
    • Understand the AO performance when using one single GS for low-order (asteroids case where the point-like asteroids is used as GS and has a proper motion)

Io F. Marchis Io v1 (xls)
  • Can we have CVF filters for low resolution (narrow band) imaging?
Multiple Asteroids 1:
Survey mode to find new systems
F. Marchis Aster1 - v1 (xls)
  • How do we lock one of the TT sensor on the moving asteroid while the other TT sensors are locked on NGS
  • Benefit of Visible versus NIR imager TBD
Multiple Asteroids 2:
Orbits determination for the discovered systems
Aster2 - v1 (xls)
Kinematics of AGNs M. Ammons AGN-GOODS - v1 (xls) see discussion on configuration
Shaping of PPNe D. Le Mignant PPNe - v1 (xls) This is not an official science case, yet good example to see the possible TT star configuration
