Keck NGAO Team Meeting #2

8:30a - 5:30p
Tuesday, November 14, 2006
012 Robinson Laboratory, Caltech

Directions: Getting to Caltech (.html) and Caltech campus map (.pdf)

In propria persona: Adkins, Bauman, Bouchez, Cameron (am), Dekany, Gavel, Ireland (am), Max, Moore, Neyman, Velur, Wizinowich
In effigie (e.g. on the phone): Flicker, Johannson, Le Mignant, Liu, Marchis

Goals: (Tentative)
  • Introduce team structure and responsibilities
  • Review System Requirements Document (Release 1)
  • Review key drivers for each of the NGAO performance and efficiency budgets
  • Review recent trade studies
  • Review Keck Interferometer requirements (N.B. these are not (yet) NGAO requirements imposed by KI)
  • Review instrumentation study strategy for NGAO system design phase

Agenda: (Tentative)

  • 8:00 am Refreshments
  • 8:30 am Welcome and Team Introductions (All)
  • 9:00 am Management Report (Wizinowich) .ppt
    • Review study overall progress, progress against milestones, and summary financial situation
  • 9:30 am Science Requirements Document (Release 1) (Max) .ppt
    • From the SD SEMP: The SRD describes the new system in terms of the needed scientific and technical performance. The document also expresses specific requirements for implementation or design where those requirements are essential to satisfactory integration and interoperation of the new system with other observatory systems.
    • Review changes to science requirements contained in SRD (Release 1) compared to June NGAO proposal
    • Discuss science / engineering team interactions
  • 10:30 am Break
  • 10:45 am Key Performance Drivers (Dekany) .ppt
    • Review the key architecture and technology drivers for each of the 7 performance and 2 efficiency budgets
        • Astrometric Precision (Neyman)
        • Background (Bouchez)
        • Encircled Energy (Gavel)
        • High-Contrast (Macintosh)
        • Photometric Precision (Britton)
        • Polarimetric Precision (Ireland)
        • Transmission (Bouchez)
        • Wavefront Error (Dekany)
        • Observing Efficiency (LeMignant)
        • Observing Uptime (Johansson)
  • 12:15 pm Lunch
  • 1:00 pm Trade Study Report: Fixed vs. Variable LGS Asterism (Velur) .ppt
    • From the WBS DIctionary: Consider the cost/benefit of continually varying the LGS asterism radius vs. a fixed number of radii (e.g. 5", 25", 50"). Complete when LGS asterism requirements have been documented.
  • 1:30 pm Trade Study Report: LGS Asterism Geometry and Size (Flicker) .ppt
    • From the WBS Dictionary: Find the simplest LGS asterism geometry meeting the performance budget goals (e.g. quincunx, ring, 1+triangle, or hex) and the asterism radii. Consider optimization of the Strehl of the tip/tilt stars and the resultant sky coverage as well. Complete when LGS asterism, HO WFS, and LO WFS requirements have been documented.
  • 2:00 pm Keck Interferometry Requirements (Neyman) .ppt
    • Review the KI requirements on delivered wavefront, including wavefront error and polarization
  • 2:30 pm NGAO Instrument Study Strategy (Adkins - RD suggests + Moore) .ppt
    • Review the strategy, scope, organization, and expectations for instrument "proposal-level" development within the NGAO system design phase
    • Discuss science /engineering team interactions
    • Review schedule for initial NGAO instrument concepts (proposed:)
      • Interferometer
      • Near-Infrared IFU
    • Review scope of upcoming Trade Study: Science Instrument Reuse
  • 3:45 Break
  • 4:00 Discussion: Upcoming tasks and milestones (Wizinowich) .ppt
  • 4:30 General Discussion (All)
  • 5:30 Adjourn

  • Evening NGAO Dinner in Old Town Pasadena (to be arranged)
