Data evaluation

We need to have a system for evaluating incoming data. The main component of this task is to coherently type candidates using the spectra observed through multiple facilities. Most days there will be a number of SEDM spectra, some days the inflowing spectrum volume will be larger. These need to be visually examined and cross-matched using SNID. There might also be candidate typing coming from other channels, e.g. ePESSTO, ATels and other ZTF groups. Based on this we need to develop a combination of a machine readable format and free comments. Evaluation could be a combination of data quality ('low S/N', 'host contaminated' or 'good') and type conclusion ('No idea', 'Uncertain type (possibly redo)', 'Type determined, but not more', 'Type determined and sufficient for subtyping and/or spectroscopic features', 'Type known, but get more data (weird, or interesting candidate)').

We also need to repeatedly evaluate the projected photometry for the current sample and evaluate whether we should request extra photometry (e.g. for good SNe with good spectra but a large gap in some band). This component should probably be transferred to another task, but is inserted here for now.

As for every task, the evaluation chair will probably develop the best expertize for evaluating spectra, but is not expected to do the examination every day.

Possible tools

  • Where should spectra be collected? WiseRep is a good candidate, but is it fully sufficient?
  • Presumably we will run SNID, but where and based on what catalogue? How to evaluate?
  • Scripts to automatically retrieve eg the marshall, ePESSTO etc classification.
