Usage of NOT spectraNOT spectrum policy.
This is to clarify the usage of NOT spectra for the ZTF partnership, (based on a discussion I had with Shri in August.)
Short version:
* We upload all NOT spectra to the Marshall so that the partnership can see all our data.
* If you want to use these for a publication - you need to contact us
(jesper@astro.su.se).
We are normally happy to have ZTFers publish the NOT data, and typically ask for inclusion of 1-2 observers.
Background:
NOT is a facility at which we at OKC can apply for time.
We do so every semester.
Allocated ToO time is charged a fee, so we pay in cash for every trigger.
All NOT spectra are reduced by us and are uploaded to the Marshal.
We want everyone within the collaboration to be able to see these.
We are convinced this transparency maximizes science.
The NOT spectra are still "owned" by us. With this I mean that we expect anyone that wants to use them for a publication to ask us.
I foresee that we are happy to share as long as there is no direct scientific clash. Such situations should anyway be resolved within the SWG.
If the spectrum contributes significantly to the science of the paper, we typically ask to invite the PI and the reducer as coauthors,
which for CC SNe has been Jesper and Francesco.
After 1 November, Leonardo and Cristina has taken over Francescos role.
If there is more of SN Ia science, Ariels group may chip in.
We think transparency is important to allow people to do science with the data that we originally did not think of. More eyes are better.
This is why we want to upload all our data to the Marshall.
We make no distinction in triggering on ZTF sources discovered in partnership time or in MSIP time.
If offered co-authorship for the spectra we can also help with additional reductions, provide 2D fits files etc.All co-authors
will of course also read and comment on the final paper.
In terms of triggering, we are happy to take requests from the partnership. We have in principle only observing time to trigger for SNe,
so we avoid triggering CVs, GRBs or other transients that are in direct conflict with competing ToO NOT science programmes.
We do reserve the right to prioritize triggers in accordance with own interests. We have not yet turned down any request from the collaboration (iPTF/ZTF)
for which the observations could significantly contribute to a publication. Basically all our allocated NOT telescope time has been
spent on iP/ZTF targets. If you have requested an observation from us, we do expect you use it in your coming publication. Even if you
did not request the observations, we welcome usage of spectra on the Marshall - just contact us.
We can not trigger on any night, but only on pre-selected nights, like
1-2 times per week, and then max 1.5 hours per night. This is why we
sometimes need prioritazion.
The NOT schedule is on http://www.not.iac.es/observing/schedules/
and we can typically trigger on Nordic service time when ALFOSC is mounted.
Triggering is manual and often involves communication with staff and coordination with other ToO programmes.
This is why we feel justified to request authorship-invitations for users of NOT spectra. Whenever we use data from other facilities
(LCO/Keck/P200...) we at OKC try to use the same policy when offering co-authorship.
