In the context of the five review elements, please evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the proposal with respect to intellectual merit.

1: Advances in astronomy science and advances in instrumentation science. 2: Unique combination of adaptive optics aided observations with Antarctic environment. Expectations to push the state of the art in astrometric accuracy thanks to the unique characteristics of the environment. Validating the feasibility of automated AO observations in an adverse environment will be interesting. 3: Yes. One possible weakness is that the PI has only < 10% of his time committed on this project, which might impact his abaility to provide leadership. Success can be readily assessed through a panel review. 4: Very well qualified for the telescope / AO development. Whether the team will have or have access to enough expertise on the specific challenges and solution of deploying such instrumention in an Antarctic environment is more difficult to assess. Proposed facility would combine adaptive optics capabilities in the Antarctic. This is unprecedented. 5: It looks like the resources are available, except perhaps for some specific expertise in developing instruments for severe weather conditions.

Summary Statement

A well thought out project, which could lead to a facilty with unique characteristics. Carrying out this feasibility is the first step to evaluate the risks and opportunities in such an endeavour. I think this project is worth supporting.
